These gloves are the awesome. Fingerless and mittens all in one. They button up when you need some warmth, but then you can fold them back and button them in place so the finger part doesn't get in your way. As well as a fold down thumb for all your thumby needs!

PATTERN NOTES
The buttons you choose for this project can be round, square, decorative, any shape or color you would like as long as it has only two holes or a shank button. It is best though to knit up your swatch with buttonholes in both ribbing and seed stitch as directed in the pattern, and take it with you when you buy your buttons. This way you can make sure that your buttons are small enough to fit through the holes created by the yarn overs, and large enough they don't slip out too easily.
Knitting buttons into your work actually takes place over two rows. First you pull the button onto a stitch so that it sits vertically on your needle (wrong side, or side you don't want the button on). Then on the next row you bring the button over with a purl stitch so that it sits horizontally across your work (right side, or side you want the button on). (Photo #)
Pattern Stitch: 1 x 1 rib
(k1, p1) repeat for desired length on right side rows
(p1, k1) on wrong side rows
When working in the round, with an even number of stitches (k1, p1) across the round.
PATTERN
Thumb
CO 18[20, 22]. Divide evenly between 4 needles. Join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.
Work in 1 x 1 rib until work is 2[2.5, 3)]inches long. Cut yarn, leaving a twelve inch tail, and place all stitches on waste yarn, or onto a spare needle.
*Finger Flap:*The finger flap is ribbed in the middle with a 4 st seed stitch border on each side.
*Left Hand:*
Slip 6-8 buttons onto your yarn. You will knit these into the work at a later point. If you come to the buttons while working, and it is not yet time to incorporate them into your work just slide them farther down the strand.
Using the yarn you just slipped the buttons onto, CO 52[56, 60] sts.
Row 1: p1, k1, p1, k1, start 1 x 1 rib pattern (k1, p1), work across until there are 4 sts left, k1, p1, k1, p1, turn.
Row 2: Repeat Row 1.
You will now add the buttons along the top of the flap, 7[7.5, 8] inch palm circumference:
Row 3: p1, k1, p1, k1, work rib pattern for 8 (8, 8) sts, k1 with a button, work in rib pattern for 7 (9, 11) sts, k1 with a button, work rib pattern until there are 4 sts left, k1, p1, k1, p1, turn.
Row 4: p1, k1, p1 with a button, k1, work rib pattern for 8 sts, yo, k2tog, work rib pattern for 6 (8,10) sts, yo, k2tog, work 10 (10, 10) sts in rib pattern, p1 bringing the button over so it sits across the purl stitch (photo #), work rib pattern for 7 (9, 11) sts, p1 bringing the button over, work rib pattern until there are 4 sts left, k1, p1, k1, p1, turn.
(all sizes)
Row 5: ssk, yo, k1, p1, work rib pattern until there are 4 sts left, k1, p1 bringing the button over, k1, p1, turn.
There should now be three buttons and three corresponding holes made from the yarn overs.
*Repeat rows 1 and 2 for about 1 inch (about 11 rows).
Add another button to the edge:
Row 6: p1, k1, p1 with a button, *k1, work in rib pattern until there are 4 sts left, k1, p1, k1, p1, turn.
Row 7: ssk, yo, k1, p1, work in rib pattern until there are 4 sts left, k1, p1 bringing the button over, k1, p1, turn.
Repeat from the * until the finger flap is 5 (5.5, 6) inches long
End on a row that ends on the edge of the flap with buttons on it.
Slide all of the sts onto waste yarn to hold them.
*Right Hand:*
Add another 6-8 buttons to the yarn. Work the right hand flap like the left hand flap but reverse all Shaping. Joining the finger flap into a tube (follow directions for both hands): Wrap the flap around your hand overlapping the 4 border stitches on each side. The buttons should be on the inside overlap with the buttons facing outwards, and the yo edge on top of them. (PHOTO #)
Slide these 8 sts onto a needle, one from the front, one from the back, until all 8 sts are on the needle. When you slide the needle through the sts, make it so the point of the needle is going towards the working yarn (PHOTO #). K2tog twice. The yarn should be in the middle of the border sts, two worked sts on one side, 4 un-worked sts on the other. Slide these back onto the scrap yarn or spare needle. Hold the tube with the working yarn to the right. Pick up the stitches to work in the round, starting at the working yarn. Mark the beginning of the round with a stitch marker. Divide stitches so that there are three needles with the same number of sts, and the fourth that number plus two (for the unworked join sts). Work one round in stockinette stitch, when you get to the stitches from the join that have not been worked, k2tog twice, so that there are now 48[52, 56] sts total. You will also be knitting the two stitches already worked again. Work in stockinette stitch for .5 (.75, 1) inches. *Join the Thumb:* Work one more round in stockinette stitch, dividing the sts between the two needles, place marker before the last stitch, 24 (26, 28) sts on each needle, and remove the marker marking the start of a new round. Place half of the thumb stitches on a needle. Continuing with the second needle of the last round, work 1 x 1 rib to the end of the needle. Using another needle, work 1 x 1 rib across the last half of the thumb, k1 from the flap piece, place st marker, k to the end of the needle (the total number of sts will be the number in the last step, 24[26, 28] plus the amount on the thumb 18[20, 22]). This is the new start of a round, it should be the side without the finger flap seam, opposite the thumb (place stitch marker). Now the sts will be divided equally between the needles and the thumb gusset started: With another needle, k one-quarter of all sts, with a new needle k to the stitch marker, ssk, work 1 x 1 rib to the end of the needle (one-quarter of total sts, minus 1), work 1 x 1 rib pattern until 2 sts remain before stitch marker, k2tog, k 9 (11, 13) sts, k to the end of the remaining needle (the last quarter of sts). *Thumb Gusset:* Round 1: k to the marker, k1, work 1 x 1 rib pattern until 1 st before marker, k1, k to the end of the round. Round 2: k to the marker, ssk, work 1 x 1 rib pattern until 2 sts before marker, k2tog, k to the end of the round. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until only two sts remain between the markers. There should be 48 (52, 56) sts total. *Cuff:* Work 1 x 1 rib for 2 inches, or until cuff is desired length. Bind off using sewn bind off. *Finishing:* There should be a yarn tail at the join of the thumb and hand. Thread the tail on a needle and sew up the hole, drawing the hole closed. Weave in ends. Use needle and thread to sew any of the buttons that seem loose.
